A Sit Down with Multidisciplinary Artist Michael Micha of Abandoned Studios

Console 2.jpg

Michael Micha is an audio engineer, musician, and collage artist from upstate New York. He runs Abandoned Studios, which is located directly above the Spool Contemporary Art Space in Johnson City, NY. I had the opportunity to tour the studio, and talk with Michael about some of the trials and tribulations one faces operating as an independent studio owner, and as a creative in a small upstate scene.

Being both a studio owner, and a musician Michael was able to discuss his perspective from both sides of the coin regarding the accessibility of recording tools, and the home recording movement among indie artists. We were also able to dive into complex topics including the pros and cons of DIY culture, the challenges of balancing artistic & commercial endeavors, and the looming threat of displacement his studio faces due to urban renewal in the neighborhood.
